Charing Cross Lighting Upgrade

When we were called to carry out an inspection and report on the condition of the lighting system at Charing Cross, we found that the ageing support system was beyond its serviceable life, and it was becoming structurally unsafe. We recommended immediate repairs and informed the client that they should plan to replace the containment system as soon as was practicable.

Charing Cross Lighting Upgrade

The M8 Charing Cross Tunnel in Glasgow is one of Scotland’s busiest road tunnels, positioned right in the heart of Glasgow it handles 150,000 vehicles daily and it is one of Europe’s busiest sections of motorway.

When we were called to carry out an inspection and report on the condition of the lighting system, we found that the ageing support system was beyond its serviceable life, and it was becoming structurally unsafe.

We recommended immediate repairs and informed the client that they should plan to replace the containment system as soon as was practicable.

We carried out a full condition survey using a traffic light indication within the report to show to their client the areas of greatest concern.

We carried out the urgent the RED repairs to ensure the road was safe for the travelling public to continue to use, and this offered an immediate solution to the dangers highlighted allowing the client to plan for the future.

Scotland Transerv’s client Transport for Scotland issued a request for a lighting upgrade quotation and a contract timeline.

SPIE Manchester carried out the design using Signify’s LED Tunnel lighting, Signify supplied the lighting materials, and we carried out the installation of the project on behalf of SPIE Manchester.

The project was carried out with nightly closures to minimise traffic disruption, and all plant and materials were cleared for the motorway to open daily. Although this was a challenging project, we completed it ahead of program with zero defects and within budget.
